DUI: Why do I need an Attorney?

The reason why people hire an attorney is for legal protection. As a trained officer of the court, it’s the job of the attorney to understand how the legal system works and how to protect your rights as a U.S. citizen. Just as physicians are hired to protect your body from disease, lawyers are hired to protect your rights.

If you have been involved in a DUI or some such legal matter, hiring an attorney will help ensure that you’re being treated fairly in the eyes of the law. Left to your own devices there’s a good chance that something will slip by you and cause further incrimination or a failure to obtain the justice you deserve.

Hiring a qualified DUI attorney has many advantages. First, they are familiar with DUI law and able to use that knowledge on your behalf. This may include leniency for first time offenders. Second, they know the players including the prosecuting attorney and the judge. Having an established rapport with court officials can go a long way and work in your favor. Third, they’re professionals working against professionals. If you decide to represent yourself you’re going up against two professional attorneys as an amateur. This almost never works in your favor and there’s a reason why “A man who represents himself has a fool for a client” is an idiom.

The legal system is complicated and ever-changing. It’s the job of the attorney to keep abreast of these statutes and changes to provide stronger service to those who retain counsel. If you’re not a professional attorney then you’re most likely ill-equipped to handle legal action which can cost you not only time but money and possibly your freedom. Those are not low-risk consequences and it’s in your best interest 100% of the time to have an attorney fighting for you.

Most initial consultations are free allowing you to choose which attorney and law firm is best suited to represent you. If you are in any way involved in a DUI offense then hiring an attorney is always a smart move.
